The Heart of Homewood...

Homewood has been attracting attention: the Birmingham News on Aug. 11, and the Birmingham Business Journal on July 14. Important questions are being asked, and it is the people of Homewood who can provide the answers.

Thank you...

Many thanks for helping Homewood move purposefully toward a future that will make us proud; for joining the 400 citizens who have expressed an interest in Homewood growing wisely; for signing along with 200 neighbors the petition requesting a new or revised Master Plan for Homewood; for attending City Council meetings; for writing letters and making phone calls; and most of all for keeping the conversation alive in our community.

While I am unable to be in attendance at tonight's counsel meeting, I am strongly opposed to the plans for this redevelopment. SoHo was in a commercial area and the reuse of this land was appropriate and has served to enhance the retail and dining options in our coveted city limits. As a 15 year resident of Homewood, I strongly oppose the encroachment this new project will have on the residential areas. Please DO NOT omit the height covenant and 2 story restrictions. This area is the essence of Edgewood's charm and creating a major commercial zone in the heart of our family oriented neighborhood will compromise the charm that our area is famous for. Please do not be mistaken by this as a comment from a sappy housewife. I have been a business professional for 20 + years and have family ties to Historic Restoration, Inc., a company that specializes in historic rehab and mixed use developments. I am fully versed in the economics of this type transaction. The vast difference is that most rehab projects, like SoHo make a better use of already dedicated commercial space and in the end increases property values. I do not see this being the case in our Edgewood neighborhood, which is the envy of the city for its family focus and charm. Do you think that our friends from Mountain Brook would enjoy the razing of Crestline or Mountain Brook Village for such a proposed development? I think not.

Please Vote NO!

Thank You,
